Help ID cichlid

As james said, they can be blackish if not well or surppressed.

They are certainly not Stomatepia.

Here is one of my male Stomatepia mongo as comparison. S. pindu looks nearly the same. Just more black and a slightly higher body.

that makes sense since he's near the bottom of the hierarchy, but even still he just doesn't fit the picture of any cichlid.

yeah true it looks like my fish when it has the gray coloration. what species is it?

It's a female Copadichromis azureus.
