You are correct in a way.
They do come from commons... and they are man-made(not natural). However man has been doing this to them for over 20 years. Even myself until recently like most thought this was just another strange pleco to hit the market. But hardly uncommon as far as the amount... over the years I've had up to about 15 of them. I bet over half the pleco crowd here has had at least one.
