I bought a juvi veija from my lfs as a syn. But i was speaking to a guy on facebook and he said it was a black belt, as this is my very 1st veija, im pretty stuck atm, he is turning a dark grey with black fins, so thats leading me towards a bb , but as i say im un sure

That shape and markings looks just like my old vieja so I would say syn but you'll know for sure if the head turns red with a blue base. If its turning grey its probably stressed so I would check water parameters unless its getting routinely bullied by one of your other fish

Looks more like a syn than a black belt to me. Their colors can range quite widely depending on their mood, status, condition, etc. I wouldn't worry about it.

In my experience, the patch at the base of the tail on black belts doesn't extend as far forward as it does on syns. Plus, there is no sign of the 'belt' on yours. Here's some pics of both for comparison:

Thats guys, there are a breeding pair of kribs within the tank too, and both kribs are taking over the 4'x2' footprint, it not showing on the pictures but i can see a feint belt but only on his left side which makes me think his a bb. But the black on his tail is more like a syn, anyway i took afew pic this morning,

P. synspilum often have a black region on their belly. In my experience it intensifies once the fish starts to color up at 3-4". P. melanurus (which, according to some studies includes P. synspilum) have a prominent black patch on their belly. Here are some more photos:

In black belts the patch is a long vertical bar.

As others have noted, your fish really looks like a P. synspilum.

An unrelated breeding pair can definitely cause stress so the grey coloring should be temporary. Once the kribs calm down or he grows another inch or two I bet you'll start seeing a lot of color coming thru. It's actually looking noticeably more red today too. Syns have a very distinctive head shape and yours is already displaying that characteristic so that's the biggest factor making me lean towards vieja, but as fug said those markings also look more syn than bb so I think your lfs had it right

Thanks KOK420, that helps alot, these bloody kribs are freeswimming now so they are alittle more territorial,
But the veija looks alittle more settled in now though, more colourful n such, i may add some female cons in there to help him out

Hey guys , heres an update , his colours seem to have gone from silvery grey back to the slight pink now, i guess it was those darn kribs stressing out the tank,
