A friend of mine has this cichlid and we are not really sure what it is. I am honestly not totally sure where it comes from. It looks much different then anything I am use to with my Malawis. Please help me if you can identify this one for us. He rescued it since it was abandoned by someone. It was alone in the tank and is currently 2 1/2 inches long. He wants to get into cichlids, but we want to make sure any tankmates are compatible. Thanks

:iagree:

thats a balzani

for tank mates get Geophagus species.

i would avoid G. Brasiliensis tho.

appears to be a female too.

males should have some blue spangling on the ventral fins and behind the gills by now and will eventually grow a small hump on thier head similar to other south and central american fish.

if you can get more of them, they like to be in groups with one male and a few females.

also, theyre a gymnogeophagus species and prefer a few months out of the year with an unheated tank and can tolerate temps during this period of about 50F degrees.
