Sorry but I do not have a picture. There are gars that live in the pond behind our house. The pond is a natural spring-fed body of water about 100 acres in area and located near the Massachusetts/New Hampshire line. Some time ago, a gar was caught in the lake which took a clam bait. What gars might be native to this area?

it's most likely a longnose gar Lepisosteus osseus, which also has the widest natural distribution of the gars (the tropical gar is also distributed over a large range, but that is in Central America). there is a chance it could be a spotted gar as some have been released over there, but they are most likely non-natives when found in that area. again, a picture would help ID the fish, but with the info provided, i would go with longnose gar--
