So today the family and I went out and did some exploring just enjoying the first really nice day in a while. We went to the park and to a couple of local bodies of water. While at it we did some driftwood searching and we found a awesome stump (that i couldnt fit in my jeep cause I had the kids bikes in the back) and we took a little piece of it so that I could see if the wood would be acceptable in a tank.

Can anyone help me identify the type of tree it was. And if it is acceptable for aquarium

Here are the pics anyhelp would be greatly appreciated. If it will work in aquarium I will go and pick up the rest of the stump and start soaking it.

i can't tell what type of wood it is, but if you want to keep it in a tank, you want to clean it alot. The best thing to do is wash it with hot water, then boil it (if possible) to get rid of any unwanted passengers on/inside. The rinse it with water to get rid of anything else.

Can't say for sure but if you get some of the leaves around the tree that might give us an idea. I can identify a lot of leaves. Of course there are also a lot of trees in the same area I am assuming because this was a nature walk. Check the bark against other still standing trees in the vicinity, if you get a match find a leaf for that tree and it can be identified from there.

There was a large amount of Birch trees in the area but there was a little bark left on one of the branches of the stump and looked nothing like a birch tree. It is a wetland area. It strangely enough the stump looked like none of the trees in the immediate area. I just wish I could have fit it in my jeep. If I would have had my tow straps with me I would have strapped it to the top of my jeep lol. It is perfectly shaped to be the centerpiece in my 180 gallon.

it looks toxic id get rid of it

From what I can see the bark looks thin, almost skin-like. Of course washing it and boiling it would prevent most unwanted things from getting in the tank (which you couldn't really do with a stump unless you had a witch cauldron lol. But pieces... You can work with them. It was in a watery place right?
