I got both of these "Jack Dempseys" at Pet Smart except now a couple months later I'm noticing major differences, physically and in how they act. DSC00587.JPGDSC00588.JPG
I am pretty sure my jack in the first picture is indeed a jack, colorful aggressive etc.
But the "jack" in the second picture is growing much slower, is much darker and not aggressive, is this perhaps a green terror as i know they do not have the coloration of dempseys and they do grow slower?
Thanks!

They are both still pretty young... but generally male JD's have a lot more color to go along with increased aggression as compared to females (who are a little more drab in color and don't always fight for every inch of the tank, generally). The first fish is probably a male... the second could be either a non-dominant male or a female at that stage.

You say the second JD is a lot darker than the first. Are you saying it looks much darker now than in the pic? If so it could be because she is in spawning mode.
I have two breeding pairs of JD's and they are all under 4 inches believe it or not. The females go almost black when ready to spawn. Males go darker too but not as much.

No the pic was taken just for this post, I meant the second fish is darker than the other jack dempsey in the first picture, that's sweet that you have 2 pairs breeding though
