When my mother-in-law got rid of her tank, my husband and I took in her remaining fish. Since then, several fish have gone missing -- without a trace - such as some small angelfish, black mollies, and guppies. I suspect this catfish is eating them. Any idea what kind of catfish this is? Any solution to having harmony in the tank other than giving him away?

Horabagrus brachysoma, the Sun Catfish. It's an omnivorous catfish that can reach 18" in length (usually less in aquaria). It will eat anything it can fit in its mouth.

Get bigger tankmates. If you cannot then keep solo or sell/give away.

Like kno4te kno4te said, get tank mates it can't eat. When I owned one a while back, he was peaceful with all of my fish that were either bigger than him or his same size. After my pictus cat died, he took over one of the caves in my tank, even though he barely fit inside. As far as tank mates go, anything that can't fit in his mouth will most likely work. I kept my sun cat with silver dollars, an African leaf fish, a kribensis, and more fish along those lines; he never bothered them, but he was very territorial about his cave.
