went to local fs and they had a pleco they said could grow to 3 ft in the wild the saleperson referred to it as a mega he didn't know the full name it was about 6-8" and had a brown body with black spots any ideas?

pixs would help though

brown with black spots......

Pseudacanthicus Hystrix mite be one of the biggest species IF i'm not wrong

I never heard of a Hystrix in the pseudos. The Acanthicus Hystrix is all black, though, so it is probably not that one.

Megalancistrus sp.2 grows to 80cm SL, so with the tail included would push 90cm.

True. I guessed L-113 being that they (from what I have seen) seem to be more readily available and also planetcatfish.com claims 24" plus the tail. That works out to about 3' in LFS terms.lol

I agree, M. paranus would be much more likely, strangely it has 2 L-numbers, L113 and L234, even though it is scientifically described.

If you decide to buy it, take a look here for info http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/species.php?species=megalancistrus+parananus&species_id=207
