HELP !! Is gravel making my aquarium constantly dirty

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a good amount of assorted gravel that I bought from petsmart in my 125gal and it's crystal clear, do you have proper filtration or do you need to clean your substrate? Pics and water parameters will help with getting you better info

You don't give any information to answer your question. Gravel can't be the cause of dirty water, but it will trap fish waste and uneaten food. If you increase water circulation near the bottom it will help keep the waste in suspension so it can be taken into the filters. Also fish that dig around at the gravel will help keep the crud kicked up.

Well after looking at the current in my tank i noticed that I don't have bottom circulation I never put in the powerhead I bought because of my silver arowana who is only in the tank for a few more weeks then into my intex pool and I thought arowana hated fast current anyway i think that is the issue do you think I should put the powerhead in or is it too strong it's kind of big but I don't know the name or size of it here is a picture of my dirty tank I am so ashamed of it as of now and btw the RTC is also going into the intex pool soon so no worries there then after the arow and RTC are gone I will stick oscars

Hello; I also say that gravel does not cause dirty water. Perhaps more likely is overfeeding with the uneaten food and increased fish waste causing a problem. Perhaps the type of food that may break up into particles too small or release oils.

Additional filtration may help. Additional water changes along with gravel vac may help.

IF the tank depth & size is deterring you from doing thorough gravel vaccs during water changes, then IMO you would be better off with sand substrate which doesn't hold detritus, so good circulation & filters will constantly sweep it clean.
With gravel +messy feeds & fish, regular vaccs are not a luxury. Do it regularly during water changes.
As others have said though, it looks like your water needs more than one maintenance improvement.

Dude I'm not a noob to aquariums I have 2 aqua clears running and a canister filter rated for 200 gallons my tank is just chronically dirty the fish will be in the pond soon anyways I will just deal with it I guess until then
