Help! Is this a Scratch or a Crack?!

Hi All,

I have just noticed a 4.5cm scratch or crack at the bottom of the front pane of glass on my 4 ft tank.

It's on the inside of the tank and I can feel it when I run my finger over it, but you can't feel it from the outside.

Should I be concerned about this reducing the integrity of the tank? Do I need to get a new tank?!

It looks and sounds like a scratch imo. I personally wouldn't worry about it. A crack would leak.

Thanks so much for your reply. I bought the tank second hand and only set it up yesterday so am worried about it!!

Don't worry about it, i have a 4" scratch on the inside of my 180. I can just about feel it if i run my finger nail over it. I think it's turned into a nice little home for some beneficial bacteria so all's good!

I can feel the scratch quite a bit, I think, but it's hard to tell as I am paying close attention to it!

How do you know if the scratch/crack is something to be concerned about?

Whens there are gallons of water leaking all over your floor.

Looks like a scratch. All my tanks are pretty scratched up from years of having rocks in the tanks. Wouldn't worry about it.

That scratch looks very straight and parallel to the trim. Probably from algae scrubber.

It's simple.

Scratch - Feel on one side of glass

Crack - Feel on both sides of the glass

Also likely that in a 4ft tank a crack of that size would cause considerable leaking. It's something that you would know about without even asking.
