I recently purchased a 7 inch Oscar for a tank in my house. The guy at the fish store assured me that it would be fine with my 12-14 inch Florida gar. However I have noticed that the gar now just sits in the back of the tank and the pleco is never out. The store will not take back te Oscar so what should I do? What size tank could I store the Oscar in for the time being?

Depends on how long is temp I suppose. A 30 will suffice if its for a short time, a 55 would be preferable if its for a few weeks. I kept my 8" O in a 55 for a few weeks while my 110 was down. Word of caution, when I first got my cute baby 2.5 inch Os, they seemed so shy and scarred of life. That night they murdered my 8" mosiac gar. I know plenty of members have Os with all sorts of fish, but I wouldnt trust them

A 30 gallon will be okay short term but you must have adequate filtration and maintenance. But next time do your own research before you buy your fish from a shop or at least that particular one. If they say something like it will do okay ask them can you return the fish if it doesn't. If you feel like they misled you to make a sale don't do business with that shop anymore.

It's all over this forum, do not keep oscars with gar. I hope everyone sees this!

This but pretty much dont keep cichlids with gars. I know theres exceptions but its a good rule of thumb for the novice

Any lfs that won't take back a fish that they gave you horrible advise on to begin with... would never get another penny from me again. granted it's buyer beware.. but once you noticed said issue they should have tried to recify it. As for temp house the O in another tank... even a 10 would work short term ( you would have to do water changes daily on that size but it would house the fish) until you found it a new home or got it a new tank ( as other stated a 75 would be min imo, but a 55 would work for a few monthes).. otherwise its just a question of when not if it will kill your gar. Or humanely euthanize the O.

Thanks guys,
Normally I would have researched the topic but the guy that owns the shop is a good friend of my families and I am shocked that he is willing to risk that friendship for the price of an oscar.

any fish will go well together, it's a roll of the dice ... you'll have to keep an eye on them. for now, your gar + pleco is surprised by the new comer...give it some time, maybe they will come out and greet your O
