:confused:my golden nugget pleco is getting tail rot/has tail rot. I had a snowball pleco and it was stressed out and got a white spot on his nose because of an aggresive alge eater, which has been swictwed tanks. tHat pleco was actually sold as a golden nugget. Which i had seen at a previos shop, but when i bought the other fish the spots were slighty gloden but he had no gold trim I didn't notice. Thier going for $40 around here so i don't wan't to Loose him. Plus he has alot of Life left in him.
O.k. Too the point can tail rot be caused by maybe a cory cat in his wondering through his cave which will now be going to the crappy tank along with one gohst shrimp. My flower or bamboo shrimp w/ever u want to call it. Is cleary a filter feeder, so he shouldn't be a problem. THis Pleco i've had for over 2 months THe tank also has some guppys and 2 small clown loaches. any way he was fine for awhile i thought i finally had everything right. I was using only R.O. water It was working fine my gh was going down my kh doesn't:confused: ever seem to want to show a reeding. my old tank was heavy heavy so i started buying all R.O. water every body else on some other sites were like all R.O. All R.O. it seemed like my fish were fine, plus my black tank didn't look as dirty on the outside and (there's no white deposits plus I was thinking. My local pet store owner where I buy my R.O. said I had to use some normal water with chlorine detoxifier so i usesd some stress coat and slowly tried to introduce the hardnes " which in the natural world or streams that comes from the ground well i did that slowy and now today my pleco is out of his cave and it's not dark yet :WHOA:, it's like he's trying to show me since during the day he always used to run wen i walked to the tank ,i was told they needed there own cave and the seem to take to it. BUT THE REAL question i guess is what hardness does Golden nugget pleco's preffer or does Melifix help tail rot on plecos Does anybody Know the other readings the golden nugget prefers???? PH u Know, any would help, thanx???? Plus i took out the water softner pillow i was using. All i could do today is put melifix in and try to get to an open pet store for more R.O.. along time ago I did a hard core water change (AlOT of WATER) add a water softner pillow wich i recharge ever coulpe days and was using all R.O. for every thing I'm know I'm going to be taking some fish out and over crowding my 10 gallon because my golden nugget is my favorite fish. and i used to hate plecos till i saw one of these. I JUST WANT TO KNOW WHAT I HAVE TO DO TO KEEP A GOLDEN NUGGET HEALTHY. THANX FOR ANY ADVICE

:iagree:
but, also i wish i could be more help. its just ive never had a sick pleco:irked:

Is "tail" rot the same as "fin" rot? I am assuming so. Personally, I would put him in a qt tank, raise the temp and treat with Melafix. Others may tell you something different, I haven't had to treat for it myself...but just from things I have read I think that is what I would do. Since they are scaleless fish, I'm not sure about adding salt.

I did find this article, maybe it would help you some.

I agree, you should quarentine it if possible. Although they live in slightly acidic deeper waters, they are reasonably tolerant of pH

I'm almost positive they are the same(tail and fin) But if plecos are scaless then i should be using half the medication so u did score there, because by lookiing at it (when i get a chance) and it beening my first pleco( I didn't know there were such beautiful plecos out there, i was used to seeing only the ugly ones) and i'm 27Y/Old I can tell on my clown loaches they have no scales .
YOU get an A for effort in my book. Thanx for the link did u find ithe thread in a pleco section???

Have a wonderful day
