what grows the largest(LONGEST)? A RTC? A TSN? or A RTCxTSN hybrid i have been wanting either a tsn or the hybrid but am concerned about the size. i heard that hybrid grow massive (excess of 58 inches). I curently only have a 75 gal setup with a 8 inch aro and a couple of delhezi bichirs and an ornate one. howerver i do have a 130 gal (give or take) waitin to be used... (cant afford to set it up just yet tho):asianarow.. does it mean i cant afford to house a type of a tiger cat as well?

i got my TSN when he was already 13 inches.. i've had him for over a year and he's still only around 16inches. he's currently living happily in a 100 gallon tank with Lucy the RTC who is 2 years old and just a touch longer but MUCH fatter than Kabota and a big male Cichla Monoculous (named Buster).

i don't believe that TSN's grow as fast as the folks on this forum tell ya they do. you have time to get the other tank up and running and time to get a larger tank yet up and running. But you WILL need a much larger tank if you plan to keep them to adulthood.

you can keep it their for awhile...i guess but not in the long run. But for the largest by long sites would be the RTCxTSN hybrid catfish...TSN's are long too but get screwed up so easily by ramming the glass walls when they dash around the tank if you startle it

Well actually to all those who are commenting on what gets the largest in terms of length ... we don't really know because the hybrid simply is not an old enough species to tell what it's potential is...RTC's are Huge not only because of their length which is a potential of 5'+ but also their width... they are just a MASSIVE Beast all round, TSN's are capable of longer lenths 6'+ but don't get anywhere near as Wide... they hybrid gets a nice blend of the two up till this point and seems like it has the potential of being able to outgrow it's native cousins in length but not really confirmed as of yet simply because as I said the length of time that these guys have been available isn't long enought to get the full potential sizes.

Now to Answer GatorGabes Question, You need to wait till you have a very large tank or pond either in the works or on order from the store as the average one of these beasts will out grow your tanks in less than a year. There are some people whom have smaller specimens (usually stunted growth) but they are the exception to the rule.

you are doing something wrong else the cats grow quite fast and reach nearly 20" or so within their first year

please do not give out misinformation,
TSNs do grow quite fast

i HAVE a TSN.. he was 13" when i got him.. i've had him for just a little over a year. i don't know how old he is.. i don't know how fast he grew his first year of life..

what i do KNOW.. is that he is healthy and happy and eats well and he has grown 3.. maybe 4 inches tops in the time that i have had him. This FACT..not fiction. this is MY EXPERIENCE..

i understand that eventually he will be MUCH larger.. but i haven't lied, and i have only stated the facts of MY EXPERIENCE.

This isn't your fault most likly as it's very possible that the original owners did nothing to help with it's growth potential which is obviously stunted in someway... I have a 3yr old stunted TSN as well and have seen little growth for the first couple of months of having it however have also noticed that since there is a reason for growth (I.E. a RTC which has Outgrown it and was out competing it for food) I have seen a much more agressive eatter whom is showing the rewards of this behavior with a 2" growth spurt in the past couple of weeks....

has anyone ever actually experienced seeing a 6' plus TSN???? I've recently been to a few public aquariums and a couple had TSN's that were nothing close to this size. in fact the TSN at chattanooga's aquarium, in which i was told was relatively old, was probably no more than 3 feet if that, but very wide for a TSN. just curious if anyone has ever actually come across a behemoth of the size in which everyone on here refers that they can reach(6 plus feet).
( i'm not arguing that they get huge and only the largest of tanks/ponds should house them but just curious if some monster fish keepers here are exaggerating their facts)
the aquarium also had their sign info for the TSN as growing up to 37'' or 39'' can't remember which. either way it's a long shot from 6 feet
