I stock African Cichlids ( Everything from auratus to yellow labs etc) And my
regular 48" fluorescent is not cutting it for me. I want some brighter lighting but I do not want algae to come along with the extra lumens. Is this possible? If so could someone link me to some nicely matched light setups (Under 300$ please) For my 48" 90 gallon ?

PS I should note I am good with HPS lights but my smallest ones are 400 watts... might be excessive lol I got a dozen or so air cooled 400-600 watt HPS lamps laying around but all I can foresee is algae growth and incredible brightness,

Can someone help me out ?

i just run a good quality shop light on my 75g. it seems to do a pretty good job. and it's cheap. the light was around $20, then a couple of good quality bulbs from the pet store.

I have the semi normal shop light. I want something very bright (I keep colorful cichlids :)
But I am not growing plants nor do I wish to grow algae. What 48" standard size fluorescent bulb would be best ? Or should I convert and go for the CFL ? I just want the brightest available without excess algae growth. Thanks for the response buddy.

Hey tcarswell, I hope this message finds you well! Here's what I had on my 115 african tank and the colors popped. I ran 2-24' Hagen "Powerglow" bulbs, (you can run with the 48') and then a 48' T-5 actinic stip by "Current" The Current T-5 runs about $50.00 and is well worth it. The Hagen bulbs are around $40.00 for the 48'. Not sure if you have the fixtures. I noticed a decrease in brown algae and a increase in green algae on the higher rocks. If you have some mbunas...they will take care of this for you. Take care.
