Hi
Gotta say this forum is incredible. I've been doing a ton of research, but still can't quite figure out the solution. So here I am out in the open posting.:D

I've pretty much rebuilt an old odd sized tank (48"x11"x11") that I got from a friend. After a lot of years with malawi/tangs, I'm looking for something different. Here is what I'm after:

A single species pair, lots of personality/interaction. A pair of 'wet pets' really.
Hate dither fish, so not after skittish cichlids.

List so far, CAs
Pair of Salvini: hide too much/too big?
convicts: fry very hard to get rid of.
firemouths: too big?
carpintis:too big?
No idea on SAs

The small width of the tank (11") is really limiting my options along with lack of knowledge on new world cichlids...:(

I'd go with the cons, and I'd throw in a single grammodes as "chief fry killer!" Just make sure the grammodes is bigger than the cons or they'll gang up on him.

Ideally, I'd include a bunch of livebearers also.

Well 48*11*11= 5808/231= 25.14g. So your stocking is pretty limited. I would go for a pair of Honduran Red Points. They are somewhat similar to convicts but are much more colorful and would be easier to sell. Here is a good link with information on them. http://www.gcca.net/fom/Archocentrus_sp_Honduran-Red-Point.htm

Thanks for the ideas guy, I'll do some research on the ones you mentioned ...if only the tank had more width...

Cons will gang up on anything, no matter the size. I've got a small pair in with my foot long RD/Midas and they are relentless little buggers. They still show him who's boss, I'm just sayin' ;)

Yeah, they'll certainly try to gang up, but I've had good success with such setups many times. As long as the grammodes is bigger than the male con, it'd make a good situation.
