my 11" silver is going through a little trouble. i've grown quite fond to him and am not too interested in losing him. he won't take food, swims at the middle to lower tank and i believe is chewing his own tail. i check water conditions daily and everything appears to be normal. i only have bottom dwellers in the tank with him and a few live plants. temp is avg 80F, and power head is turned down to produce only small current. i've read that chewing own tail should be handled by daily water changes of 20-30%, leaving light off, and adding fin medication so this is what i have been doing for past 3 days. however, doesnt appear to be effective. any suggestions?
thanks as always,
chance

hi.. how big is your tank? i had an issue with my aro earlier.. he used to attack his own tail but used to eat well.. the activity stopped only after i moved him in with a couple of other aros into one big tank.. check the fins close to see if there are any parasites etc..

using general test strips. stopped medicating. tail is completely gone. no noticeable fluctuations or parasites. this guy hasnt ate in a week today and stays on lower tank. other fish in tank are perfectly healthy. i'm stumped

Get the liquid test kits rather than test strips. The strips aren't accurate and stop working after a while. Or test your water at your LFS, they usually just do it for free. For now, I would just keep doing daily water changes and offering food as usual.

could you post some pics or a video? is it somethin like the aro keeps circling and wham bites its own tail? what are the other tankmates and their sizes? how long have the live plants been in the tank? if they were a recent addition did you by any chance disinfect them? what do you feed your aro btw?

How long u own the aro for, how long ago u noticed this, tankmate?
Like other said pic would help..
It has to be something that bothers the fish, like parasite or alike

he is eating again. krill, blood worms, and i think my bicher. was an appropriate sacrifice because i believe it was picking on the aro. he still stays at bottom of tank but is much more active which leads me to believe he is on the road to recovery. thanks all!
