I have been battling these buggers for 4 years. I want to KNOW they are gone. I intend to take my tank down and let it dry out for a couple of months then do a fishless cycle and have a new start. Will an extended drying time kill the cysts or do I need to run bleach through everything?

If your going to take it down and start over I would bleach it. Just rinse it well and use a double dose of dechlor before starting it up again.

Why did you battle flukes for 4 years? What type of fish did you have?

I got the flukes in with some Blue Rams when I first set this 55 gallon tank up. Probably hasn't been 4 years actually but it feels like it. Probably 2 and half to be more specific when I think about it. I had rams, diamond tetras and angels. I have went through a ton of Prazi Pro. It hasn't been bad for a while but I think they are still there and just held in check by the water changes and occasional Prazi Pro treatment. It is a 55 gallon and I only have 1 angel, 5 tetras, and 2 otos and I don't want to add any more fish into it. I am going to put my current fish and plants in a 30 gallon and keep separate equipment for them.

Good chance after 4 yrs the remaining flukes are resistant to the prazi... might try another parasite med?

But I agree.. if I was going to compleately strip a set-up ect... no reason to not run bleach or white vinegar at least threw it all real good.

Why do you think you still have them?

I am probably paranoid. My angel still holds her gills too far out but I think they are damaged. When she was young she got hit with the flukes bad and almost died. I just want to move my survivors to a smaller tank and be able to get some new fish this fall. I love my angel fish but I would like to have a little more to look at. Bottom line I guess is I want new fish and I won't trust that tank for new fish until it has been bleached, drained, and dried out a couple of months. I still see the angel flashing once in a long while but besides her gills sticking out a little further then they should she seems happy. She lays eggs all the time and looks great. The otos and diamond tetras are a little harder to get a read on but they eat well and act normal.

Then I would strip and re-start like you wanna do... sometimes its just better for the peace of mind. or your going to tweek about it until you finally do lol ... yes speaking from personal experience. And doing so now sounds like the best time to do it.

Sometimes significant infections/parasite infestations ect can do permanenet damage like your thinking w/ the Angel. I've seen fish after say a really bad bio-bomb ( where the tank unicycles) die after a few weeks of it all being back to normal.. lift a gill plate and see the gills themselves ravaged horriably. Nothing you can really do but take care of them the best you can, and no reason to blame yourself. A lot of its just part of the learning process and sometimes just poor luck.
