Hi guys,

I have been in the process of starting up my new 75G tank for Lake Tanganyika Cichlids. As I know, everyone has different tastes for aquarium setups, but im open minded to opnions. Like to see everyones views.

I plan the tank to have Pool Filter sand #20 grit, White mixed with normal, to get a nice light color substrate...

Will also be DBN Driftwood to 'separate' territories

I have come down to the following backgrounds..

NOTE: I'll be using an AC110 filter + Fluval 305 w. inline heater (Need room to hide intakes)

I would like something darker that would contrast the coloration of the fish better... same idea as if you were using black substrate.

Pick 1: Buldge (not sure due to color)

Pick 2: Canyon

Pick 3: ( I really like this BG - Although dont think its 'rigid' enough. IE i'm looking for something with caves / crevices.

Now, Yes I know i can make my own. I have found many different DIY 3d backgrounds that I could take ideas from to make one fit my wants / needs. Although, I figured after the cost of material and time, it would be close to if not equal to the cost of a DBN background.

IF YOURE GOING WIT THE 3D BACKROUND PICK THE ONE THATS THE GREYEST.THATS THE COLOR OF THE MAJORITY OF THE ROCKWORK IN THE LAKE

I hear you on that one, Thats why Im more than likely calling out option #1 due to the color.. Love the design, but the color is not where I want it.

Matt @ DBN also has one called Pumba rock - Looks awesome but he is out of stock and its over $200...

DO I really need crevises and 'rock openings' for the tangiykians? I mean, I will have driftwood, rock piles + shells.

I just like to make them feel most comfortable, as if somewhere I would like to be =) lol

@mike - was waiting for you to pop in =).

It will be resin driftwood from DBN @ $11 for a decently sized piece its a good price (compared to what ive seen on aqua-bid and my LFS)

I figured it would add some more detail to tank or well act as a separation in the tank for the shellies?

Shouldnt have tannis, I'll have to double check though to verify :)

I agree, grey stone would look alot better. Again, I'll be using pool filter sand aswel.

I'll go price out the materials for the DIY background this weekend, see what i can come up with.

Pick the one you like. They'll all work and look good. I think that most of their rock backgrounds are available in different colors. The ones with large overhangs will be cool if you are going to keep Paracyps, but they take up more tank volume.

Resin driftwood will look good and will work. Just don't use any real driftwood. This will create a constant battle of trying to keep the hardness and pH up.
