Just got my sons 110 gallon tank ready for some Africans and i'm off to the store to get a few Yellow Labs. They are his favorite so we will start of with about 6. Whats some other non-overly aggressive Cichlids i could add ???? I want to stay away from a totally aggressive tank and would like A LITTLE piece and tranquility. I've heard the Peacocks are pretty good but the Zebra's can be very nasty. How about the Blue Hap ???? My LFS has assorted 's for $3.00 about an inch long. Should i add 30 or so and hope for the best, then weed out the bad eggs ??? I have alot of rock/slate structure so it should be fine.......I hope. I know all fish have different temperments, but i'm trying to avoid any obvious mistakes.

thanks....

Well, to start with, please don't mix mbuna with haps/peacocks. The only exception will be the yellow labs, which are peaceful to be kept in a tank of haps or peacocks.

If you want a peaceful tank, your best bet will to be to stock it as a hap and peacock tank. Unless you want to buy them all as coloured adults though, you'll have to buy groups of juveniles and let them grow and colour up. The females are typically very bland and a lot of people aim for an all male hap/peacock tank, so you can remove the females once you're sure which are which, if you so choose.

Yeah if you want peacful stay away from Mbuna (rock dwellers) and stick with Utaka (open water). This isnt a garunteed way to steer clear of aggression but most species of african cichlid that could be referred to as "easy going" are Utaka.(as are a few of the worst)

also if you want peaceful stay away from the "assorted africans" tank until later when you have a really good eye for whats what.....Then you might be able to spot some really good finds in the "assorted" tank. (thats where I got my Aul. Maylandi, "Sulpher Head Peacock")

I would say just starting out and wanting minimal aggression from african cichlids your best bet is any sort of peacock.Other than that yellow labs (electric yellows) and acei do well with Utaka.

You could also go with a Red Empress, Taiwan and Higga Reef along with the many other wonderful haps from Lake Malawi. Go with the Haps and Peacocks for a great colorful tank. Here's an example of my tank.
