I want to put a poly in my future arowana tank. It will be my first poly, im looking for one that looks cool but is active, I dont really want one that sits on the bottem all the time.

THanks

The most active would be a senegalus but they only grow to about a foot long so they may not go well with large arowanas. You might want something that grows larger like an ornate or any of the lawer jaw bichirs like the endlicheris and lapredeis. They're not as active as the senegalus but they still will swim once in a while looking for food.

what kind of aro? silver?

by far the most active would be P. senegalus and P. palmas polli. but as is300zx said senegalus only gets to around 10"-12" so it may not go well with larger aros. palmas polli gets to around 14" eventually and tends to fatten up with age, so its rounder and the higher body mass may allow the combo to work. P. delhezi is semi-active, but again it only gets to ~14".

the larger species are not as active, and many are just plain lazy. P. ornatipinnis tends to get quite active the larger they grow, but in general they are quite nocturnal when small so you will have to put up with that until it gets bigger. P. endlicheri congicus is also quite active, ime the most active of the lower jaw species. for P. endlicheri endlicheri, i'd put it in the semi-active to lazy category. and i'd say P. bichir lapradei are the lazy bunch. all of these larger species will be compatible size-wise, eventually that is. its the growth rate that you need to take into account here when housing with say a silver aro.

for a senegal, 1.5"-2" per month is quite reasonable until it reaches ~8"-9", and slow down quite noticeably afterwards so it'll take a little while to reach 12". i don't remember the exact numbers, i'm gonna say 1.5-2 yrs

for ornate, you can expect similar fast growth in the beginning when its 3"-4", and then slows down a bit but grow steadily until around 15". to get to 18" would probably take at least 5 yrs or so. again i can't remember precisely, but that seems reasonable to me.

this is true with all bichirs, fast growth when small, and then hit a plateau in growth after they reach a certain size and growth slows drastically. when this happens depends on how large the species get.

Endli Endli would be a good choice too, they are usually more active than the ornates and seem to grow faster too, but if you have the space and funds, then get both (ornate and endli) just to be safe gat a bchir at least an inch bigger than your aro, possibly 1 inch give or take with your aro.

ornates has nice coloration, if you want big go for lapredei, endlicheri endlicheri or even endlicheri congicus, but size difference between them must not be that big or else your bichir will get eaten
