I can't decide between the Eheim 250w and the 300w for my new 135 gallon tank. Eheim recommended the 250w when I contacted them, but I'm a bit skeptical on its ability to maintain a consistent temperature for CA/SA cichlids.

Should I go with their recommendation or get the bigger heater?

The bigger one will shut off more frequently as it heats the water to temp quicker. The smaller one would stay on longer as it has to work harder to heat the water. Hard to say which is better all around. I don't think I get consistent constant temps with my Eheim heaters but it's better than having no heater at all.

What is the average temp of the room, that the tank is in, during the winter season?

Remember to buy 2. ..they will heat up the tank faster...N in case one failed. Adding a temp controller is also a plus.

If the temp drops to that low I would definitly get 2 x 150 watt heater and have a controller controlling them both.. if you don't mind bulky I would just buy 2 200watts instead.. just becareful with your SA/CA ciclids bumping the heater...good luck with your hunt...

I have a 90g with a 40b sump - approx 120-130 gallons total. Im heating it with 2 aqueon 150w heaters and it holds temp just fine. I have yet to turn the heat on in my apartment. The tank has been at a steady 78* . Maybe my inefficient magdrive pump is helping to heat the sump, I dunno lol.
