having the right kind of light is the first thing you need. Some think like a 6700K bulb. They put out the right kind of light for the plants to grow. Really with just that you can start to try some of the easiest plants like java fern. You can add some simple liquid fertilizer like flourish to keep the plants health. Especially if all you have for substrate is the standard epoxy covered gravel.

You can start as easily as that. And keep reading and trying things out. Soon you will be addicted like some of us and start spending 100's of dollars on lighting and co2. It is a lot of fun.

i have a planted rhombeus tank i have anubias amazon swords pink lillys water melon swords and plenty of other plants can't remember the names. anubias are easy to keep because they don't need that much light and they look really nice when big. good luck

your going to need to do alot of research first. but first figure out how much light you want. or what plants you want to grow. the more light the more plants you can grow but the more equipment you need. (CO2, Fertz.....)

but sounds like your going to go basic here so i can give some advice. stick to low light plants....like java ferns (few different forms that look nice) or any anubias species. anubias are super easy to grow and personaly i really like there look. i have alot of them in my two tanks. (also has alot of different forms).... so lighting should be low. one CF or a few NO lights will work fine. personaly i would highly recomend CO2 (DIY would be fine in low light set up) you can also add excel (as long as your plants can handle it) with low lights you shouldnt need to add much fertz so you should be ok there.

for a filter. if you have alot of plant mass and low stock you shouldnt need an actual filter just a power head to have good water movement. (personaly feel that water movement is a key element in planted tanks) or any filter you would normaly put on a tank of equal size.

shrimp in a planted tank is the best i think. i just enjoy shrimp period. but yes you can add them. snails most likely you will get pond snails that just catch a ride into your tank. you can also get other type of snails just be sure they dont eat plants. they even have snails that will kill pond snails.

wow so much for me to learn, hmmm all i got is a regular light, by the way i have a sand that i used on all my tanks, i dont know what kind but its for pool arghhh i dont know can i use this? or should i use gravel? about the cherry shrimps? what will i feed them?

most of your questions aren't about plants.

the stickies is a good place to start
