Help me! Setting up GFs tank

Ok so my GF ordered a 12 gallon long (36" long) and so I ordered a 36" light but realized it was 98 watt and not 39 watts (typo in ad).

I know this is way too many light, I went ahead and ordered a Hagen co2 kit.

What else could I do to prevent a soup tank?

Fertilized gravel?

Taped light bulbs?

Blamed out glass tops?

The light cannot be returned and has to be used

lift the light and put pothos roots in the water draping the plants across the top of the tank..

The light comes with hardware so you can suspend over tank, think I'll try that or remove one of the bulbs.
