here is the question
i know what i want to do but how do i get there?
first i know i want to build a background like i did in my 75 gal.
here is a pic

then i think i want to do a nice grass planted everywhere.
so here is the question what types of plants should i get to make this dream a reality
also what type of substrate do i need to make it work.
do i need co2 and if so what is the cheapest and easiest to maintain.

i am thinking of using 2 emp 400 or 2 ac110 or maybe 2 penquin 350 which ones would you get
i know i usually scream wet dry but i know they don't play well with plants

any help would be great

Mike, I can't help you here. I can barely keep algae alive.

I have not tried grass in my tank, but I have had plenty of success with plants. Start in the back with Vallisneria, it grows tall and is unaffected with water movement. Cabomba would be a great plant for the sides, and a Giant Swordplant would be a good centerpiece plant. I don't use CO2, except for the drop in tablets. The most important supplements are iron and potassium, you can get both with Kent Freshwater Plant. Do not add a fertlizer that contains nitrogen, unless your bioload is really low. Leave your lights on for 16-18 hrs a day. Go with AC filters, and make sure the intake doesn't get clogged with plant matter. The Vallisneria in the back will help with this.

great info wurm
what kinda substrate is best

I moved this to the planted section mike. You might get more help here.

thanks rally

Here is a great place to start. This will answer several of the basic questions. Now for plants there are many options. I could list out hundreds of plants that may or may not be to your liking. The common 'grass plants' would be vals (jungle vallisneria like wurm suggested), sags, dwarf hair grass, ophiogopon japonica, ophiogopon pusillis, blyxa japonica and several others that are not so common.
