This is my first time with Saltwater. I only want a 10 Gallon Tank. I have had African Cichlid Tanks for years so I am formilar with the hobby but I know Salt water is different, So please feel free to give me any pointers for a Ten Gal Saltwater setup. Besides my love for the hobby, I want to set up this tank for my 2 year old Son to have his first Fish Tank. Cheap fish yes! Setup, That will be done the best I can :-) The questions I have right now are:

1.)What bran/model filtration should I go with, is Filter media the same for fresh and Salt?
2.) I have a Marineland maxi-jet 1200 powerhead pump. Should I use that for circulation?
3.)Do I need a filter with a protien skimmer?
4.)What are good cheap fish to put in a Ten Gallon Saltwater tank, and how many?
5.)What should my sub substrate be? Crushed Coral or Sand? I want to make a nice pile of coral in the middle.
6.)What temp/ should the tank stay at?
7.)What brand/model light?

I do NOT buy JUNK, however I am not looking to spend alot of money. I know I am dealing with Saltwater here lol Help me out here. :-)

1)Just a regular hang on is all you will need for fish only, I would go with Marineland, AquaClear or some such similar.
2)Maxijet1200 way to much for a 10g fish only, probly be ok for corals.
3)Protein skimmer not needed for fish only, yes for soft coral and others
4)Dansels are small, cheap and hardy. So are shrimp, crabs and snails. I wouldn't go more than a half dozen in one species. Maybe more for shrimp. Or one of each.
5)I would say sand will be more authentic. Same with coral.
6)Temp depends on the inhabitants. Tropicals should be 79-84, coldwater, you will need a chiller.
7)LED for light. Fish only, normal color. Corals require different colors and intensity.

Before you go several $100 deep, don't forget the maintenance requirements especially for a salt water will be more than a two year old will be able to handle.
No offense, maybe a goldfish in the ten with an "under the sea" theme and fresh water. You could even use coral and marine decorations.

Lol. Gold fish, BORING! I don't mind the Maintenance at all. The tank will be up on the counter where he can't get it obviously.

Sounds like it's more for you....Larger tanks are easier to maintain in SW. Larger tank = more water. Don't forget the RO/DI unit you'll need for water changes. Oh yeah and a storage tank with heater and circulator for water change water. You will have to keep up on water perameters because they change fast in a 10 gal.
I would researh nano tanks and take from there what you think you will need. Good luck. SW is awesome.

I just got married so next up is buying a house. I do not want to setup a big tank and then have to tear it down in a few months, hence we the reason I want a small ten gallon tank. I can get the experience with saltwater and also have a tank for my son. Yes the tank is mainly for me but my 2 year old son likes looking at the fish so I figured a ten gallon tank should not be that hard to handle
