Hi,

I just bought 2 severums.
pls help me sex them, hoping that they are a pair. but i'm not sure if one is male and other is female. they don't fight but swim together.

here's a picture of the bigger one.

Sexing severums can be a bit tricky. Males are generally larger and broader in the chest that females. The male also has more prominent facial markings than females (Brighter colouring). The safest way (and only hard fire way) to get a pair is to use the method used for Angles, add around 6-8 and watch for them to pair up. While we may encounter difficulties sexing them the fish never have this problem. It is hard to tell on juveniles and pictures don’t help its a bit easier when they are in front of you.

and then its not simple, I have a female which is the slightly larger and more coloured than the males, my males are well coloured up as well. Yet I have had females which are obviously females. Generally the males have a more pointed and prominent anal fin imo. However others disagree with this, just observe and you will eventually know. BTW both will look after the clutch and both will defend it.

Just based on facial markings and body shape I'd venture a guess and say that they are both male, but as mentioned above, it's tough, so it's an educated guess at best.

ok one thing that makes the females stand out, just before they spawn or consider breeding their bellies go pale white and they get prominent bars.
thanks :) hole my other one turns out female. its really hard to get females :(
