I have one thats seven inches and i hard and read they are almost impossible to sex. I guess venting would work but they only thing that i have read is that male tend to fade more and the female keeps more of her color as they get older. So i hope that can help you

oh yeah what size tank do you have and your butti gets along with the flowerhorn, and jag. mine will not tolerate anything except a mosiac gar and a orange pike , i recently bought a white saum , and a goby and so far so good but my white saum hides out and i never see him or the goby but i see i am going to have to give them there own tank

Your tilapia is an African fish, not a New World fish. I'll move the thread for you.

they are in a 133 gal tank

it is about 12-14 inches and the colors seem to be not faded, so maybe that is another indication it is female..... and they all seem to tolerate eachother sort of... the flowerhorn and the tilapia are kinda fighting it out to see who the boss is and though the flowerhorn is a couple inches smaller he seems to be in charge most of the time

I always heard that venting will not work with these guys but I have heard that you females tend to look like they always have a full belly and males tend to look more flat in the belly region...

Never heard the fading color method, but I would agree that your butti is female because he/she looks to have a large belly!!!
