I have sand as my substrate in my tank, well my african cichlid will pick up the sand in its mouth and spit it out in the two front corners of the tank only. i dont quite understand why it is doing this, any ideas?

First, I have a few questions. Do you only have one African Cichlid in the tank? What type of Decorations do you have in the tank? Which African Cichlid do you have? How old is the African Cichlid? How long have you had him in this tank?

I know that many of the experts here will have some good opinions which will lead to a satisfactory answer, but it would be helpful to ahve a few more details to form an opinion

Here is a bump in the hopes of hearing some varied and insightful ideas on the personalities of our Cichlids.

i have two but i have no idea if either of them are male or female. one is electric blue and im not sure about the other. just the stupid cichlids they sell in every pet store. they have been together in the same tank for almost 2 years and this is the first time i have noticed it ever doing this. i have a bunch of fake plants along the bottom but it dug those up and their floating on the top. thank you!

ok thanks. i just dont understand why this just started yesterday when they have been in this tank with the sand for quite some time

They are mature. Nature may be taking it's course.

The whole Community of Cichlids I have in 6 Different aquariums all move the substrate to their liking. I keep them active with my vacuuming and water changes. My tanks are always in a perpetual motion of change.

Mike must have at least 300 African Cichlids. <-- Sure wish I could afford his hobby

hah i wish i could have that many fish! i wouldnt know what to do with them all. haha. ok thanks guys!
