hi there to all,

i got a poly for a couple of months which had perfect nostrils. but over the months it started to have its nostrils turning whitish and shrinking. now it has no more nostrils. is it a kind of disease? btw its still eating well

thanks! :)

What other fish are in the tank?
What are the water parameters?

all other fishes are polys.

pH 6.6
ammonia 0
nitrite 0

pls advice. thanks

Ph does sound a little low, but if the other polys aren't losing their nostrils, I'd be hard pressed to blame that.

What about nitrates?

What size is this poly compared to the others? Is it possible that it's nostrils got bitten in a feeding frenzy and the tissue died but will eventually grow back?

Still waiting for them to grow back. Also you should try to bump your ph up to african biotope parameters.

I have never heard of any specific disease that attcks just the soft tissue of the nostrils they usually trun white if they are damaged ie. bitten, or run into things etc. this is very strange-Anne

btw wats ur pH values like? guess got to bring it up to 7.5?

The water in my area is naturall 7.5-8.0. It fluctuates. I put some coral and some african cichlid mix sand to help buffer the ph. As far as putting chemicals to fix ph, I try not to use them too much. I try to always look for natural ways to lower or raise ph. Hopefully our bichirs can get their barbels back. From your accounts and from what I have seen, our bichirs are thriving without them.

i used to have another poly(lap) which i given it away, suffered from this too but i thought it was nothing until this current poly(weeksii) got it too. got abt 18 polys in tank but only this one contracted it.
