I've had "Stretch" since 1990, he is ~15" long and just this week(Monday) his head started turning white. The first time i noteced it, monday, it was only on the right side of his head, on tueday it spread to the left, today, it is showing on his back. It does not appear to be something growing on him, it is more like the pigment is going away. The area on his back looks like someone took some sandpaper to him. He does have a common plecostomus(8'') as a tankmate and I have seen him "cleaning" him, but the bony areas look like they are turning clear, so unless the pleco can suck the color out of him I cannot believe that is the reason.
He is behaving completely normal and eating normal, so if this is just a sign of old age I guess it is ok, but I doubt it.
Sorry for the long post, I've had this fish longer than my daughter! So I feel he deserves it.

it's the pleco...seems to be a problem with some plecos, fei fengs and such "licking" gar. get the pleco out, warm it up a bit, add salt @ 1tbsp/5gal, keep you're water extra clean, he'll be fine in a few days.
