I just bought a pleco yesterday ago from my lfs and he was fine and active for the entire day but later that night he stopped moving, and stayed in one spot. this morning he was still in the same spot and his fins were a little torn up. About an hour ago I looked and he had a few irregular whiteish spots on him but there were only a few. I have a 55 gallon tank, hard water, ph-6.8, I use quickdip test strips, ammonia is ok, nitrates and nitrites are in check, its freshwater, aquarium has been set up for about 2 months, i ahve a 6 inch senegal bichir, a 3 inch bala shark, 3 inch pictus cat, 6 inch needlenose gar, 2 red claw crabs, brown knife fish, and a giant danio. (besides pleco). Fish was not placed under quarantine (still trying to get a tank for one) temp is 78, no live plants, emp 280 filter, no sunlight, last water change was today i did a 50%, fish get fed shrimp pellets/ occasional rosy minnows.

You stated you had hard water yet your pH is 6.8 which is very soft. Do you use any chemicals or RO water or anything in the tank?

My guess is the knife fish attacked it. I used to have a pleco with a black knife and it beat the crap out of the pleco all the time. Thats a real odd mix of fish, the crabs wont even live long, they need brackish and access to air. Bala sharks need to be in schools too. Needlenose gar outgrows tank as well.

I had put in ph increase today
My bet is that's why he's sick. pH uppers and downers can kill fish. Don't touch your pH, it's fine exactly where it's at without chemicals. Until you understand kh and gh just leave the water as is with only declorinator. Besides-common (or any) plecs don't 'need' soft water. They need stable water. I suggest a 50%-60% water change ASAP to get that stuff out of there.

alright, Ill keep you guys posted. all my fish do fine in the soft water but my needle nose needs 7.0 minimum apparently so Ive been trying to raise it. How should I handle the ph without chems?
