Hey everyone, so as some of you know I have a lot of tanks in my fish room. I'm suddenly having a problem in one if my 125 gals. That I've never had yet with this tank. It's my American cichlid aggressive community tank and it holds a male salvini (8 inches), a male convict (5 inches) , a large presumable male firemouth (7 inches!), a female jack dempsey (7 inches), AND my Texas cichlid which is either a carpintis or a hybrid between carpintis and cyanoguttatus. He's just recently hit the 10 inch mark and something seems to have snapped. I know I have quite a lot in the tank, but that's why I'm running 2 fluval 406 canisters rated for 100 gallons each along with an Aquaclear 110 power filter. They were raised together since they were all under 3 inches (except for the firemouth he's an old guy). Up until now texas never cause problems and was honestly a wuss when he was younger. He was easily intimidated and never caused problems and the tank was actually extraordinarily peaceful once the salvini took the roll of "top dog" and kept everything in line. They've lived in peace like this for a year and a half and now suddenly the Texas decided he doesn't want peace anymore.. He wants all out war. Nothing has changed, the set up and decor has been the same for a few months, my water parameters are exactly where they should be like always, the food is the same, the fish are the same..but the Texas is going NUTS. He's chasing and biting all the other fish chasing them all around the tank making splashes everywhere, the dempsey and convict are hiding in caves or at the surface, the firemouth is thinking to himself " I'm too old to have to put up with this crap" and the salvini is the only one fighting the Texas back. And I must say, the salvini isn't going after any other fish except for the Texas whenever te Texas tries to attack him. The fighting between the two of them has gotten so bad I had to put a divider in. Now that the Texas is blocked off by himself, the salvini is perfectly peaceful with the other fish and there all fine except for some ripped find caused by the tex... The Tex on the other hand is constantly biting the divider trying to break through and attack the others... What they heck happened to him he's never been aggressive at all till now and he was one of my favorites. Now he's acting like the biggest baddest Red Devil out there lol. What could have triggered this? The only female fish is the dempsey so at first I thought maybe he wants to breed with her but he has been just as hostile towards her as he was to the others. I just don't know what to do. I knew Texas cichlids could be belligerent and territorial but nothing like this.

It's funny you compared him to red devils. Which is true but most of the devils don't wait until they are the biggest in the tank. That is kind of wierd... I say kind of because my texas snaps on whatever I have him paired with from time to time. The cause of his flipping out is unknown. But I have experienced it too. I'm not sure how to help with your situation. I just want to say you are not alone when it comes to these fish going BERZERK! Lol

I don't really look at it as hes going berserk. He is simply claiming the whole tank, and the other fish are unable to get out of his territory. Is there sufficient line of sight barriers? That may help, but honestly I'm not sure what you do with fish that big decide to claim a tank!

Maybe his need to be dominant is just happening now at his max size.I will say that hybrids are kind of unpredictable. My jagXtexas is 10-11 inches and nuts

I unfortunately don't have any bigger tanks right now and my 75 and other 125 are different set ups that's are already occupied, I have smaller tanks but I wouldn't dare out him in anything less than 75. And he really does seem to be going extremely crazy all the sudden lol like aside from attacking all the other fish, he attacks the divider he attacks the glass he's started to even go after my hand if I go in the water. Will this pass? Or does he really need his own tank now? If this behavior doesn't spot I don't know what to do I don't want to sell him or give him up but I love the other fish In the tank like the salvini and dempsey, and the firemouth who I must have had for 7+ years now. There's plenty of rock work and huge pieces of driftwood and mopani wood and some artificial plants tied down to rocks. Before I put the divider in he would seek out all the other fish whether he could see them or not. Does he want to breed or something? Or is this just how he's become now that he's full grown? I didn't know a Texas would take over a 125..I can totally see one taking over a 4 foot tank but damn.. Lol

texas typically try to dominate tanks, especially if they can get away with it. My texas has outgrown one of my jaguars so he tries to pick on her, but after she checks him he doesn't do it anymore. If he feels he is dominant, he will continue to beat on the fish.

When most large Central American cichlids hit maturity, they will claim a territory of 4' x 4' x 4', if not larger. Trying to combine more than a pair of large cichlids ( or an alpha male) in a tank as small as a 125 gal with other large Central American cichlids is really pushing their tolerance limit.
To me your alpha cichlid is acting normally, not going berserk.
I have watched a pair of jack dempseys in nature chase every other cichlid from an area the size of an SUV in a cenote of over 1 million gallons, a 125 is barely more than a puddle.
