I need to up the filtration on my 100 gal acrylic tank. It has a built in sump but with the baby Pbass getting bigger its just not keeping up. The ledge on the sides is too big for a HOB. Could I re-plumb (intake and return pipes) a canister to reach across the ledge? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Right now I am doing 25% wc's every 2 days.

You should be able to use a cannister to increase your filtration. Most acryllic tanks...even those with built in filtration have provisions for cannisters...if not ....cannister hoses don't require a lot of room.

A picture of the top of the tank would help us in providing a solution for you.

Some large sponge filters may be an cost effective way to keep it going.

Here are a cpl of pics of the top. Kind of a bad angle as its a tall tank and I'm short.

Those aren't just overflows?

I've seen that sort of 'in tank' filtration before and you have plenty of room on either side for the hoses from a canister filter. I'd recomend a 405 Fluval for that size tank or a 2217 eheim. A Rena xp3 might work on the low side but I'm not a big fan or Renas in general.

Thanks Wolf i know I have room for hoses. When it comes to a canister, from my limited experience they have hard plastic pipes that hangover or are clipped to the back of the tank. Can I extend those pipes using pvc or the like w/o reducing the effectiveness of the filter?

yes...in fact I do it all the time....The filter I recomended, in fact, just uses tips and the hosing itself. (405) You can also buy a variaty of inlet and outlet tubes that are simple to connect to the factory hoses.

Cool I'll start looking tomorrow. Would you reccomend intake on 1 side return on the other?

Thanks

Cichlid Savage,

Are you detecting ammonia? That's the only measurement I know that indicates that you don't have enough BB to keep up with the bio-load.
