hi guys need some advice urgently. I am in the midst of setting up my tanks With rena xp3 and ... the tank on the top is set up and the filter is running fine but the one nearer to the ground.... is making lots of noise but not pumping ~ tried all the things the manual says to no avail..pls help if u had similar probs....

Make sure you stacked the crates right. I know when i first set mmine up i had two faceing the right way but the middle one off.

Another common problem is if there is an air bubble between the pump and the water level. What to do is while it is doing this slowly unhook 1 of the clips just until you hear some air rush out, and then clip it back. You might be a few drops of water on the ground, but nothin serious. I am sure there is another way to do this, but I have found this to be least time consuming.

I have an xp3 question, the manual says I have to use for the biological filtration/center basket BioChem Stars OR Ceramic rings. The picture shows half and half in the basket, and the guy I bought it from didnt have either, he had some pebble looking rocks.

Is it best to mix stars and rings, or just one, or get something totally different.
Thanks

So you have two tanks? The top with the XP3 is running fine, yet the bottom tank is with a XP3 that is not working, am I correct with this assumption?

The XP3 works with a gravity siphon and the water line needs to be well above the filter. So if the XP3 is sitting next to the tank instead of below the tank, you will have a hard time getting the filter going. Make sure the entire filter is lower then the water line of the tank. Also you will have to get all air out of the filter for it to start pumping water.

Edit: note set #3 in the "Before you Begin" section of your Rena XP3 instruction booklet.

Best to start your own thread asking questions instead of hijacking someone elses. Much of the time your questions will go unanswered because they are over looked by members responding to the original poster's questions. Anyhow the pebble looking rocks could be ehfisubstrat made by Eheim which is very good biological media.

Best way to set up the XP3 that I have found is;

bottom half of lowest basket run either Eheim's ehfimech or Fluval's prefilter, the use 2 of the 20ppi foam pads.

In the middle basket first use 2 of the 30ppi foam pads add the divider and fill the rest of the basket with a quality bio media.

In the top basket, fill it entirely with a quality biomedia. I do not use any chemical filtration or the micro filtration pads, but you may choose to use them. If you fill the top basket 1/2 full of bio media and then use a divider you will have room for the chemical pouches and microfiltration pads.

thanks guys for your replies. i found it impossible to get it goin~ and i 'cheated' by letting it suck Water from the top tank and then 'pausing' it and putting the suction tube back to the bottom tank....it Worked......
