I recently bought a "Freshwater Moray Eel" and have now been told it requires brackish water but it was in normal tropical in the store, if so how do you make the water brackish? And How long would he live in freshwater? and one more question, would bichir's tolerate brackish water? Because he is kept with 2 poly rope and an ornate bichir.

Thanks,
Keith

Hi Keith, many fish stores keep their brackish inhabitants in full or nearly full fresh water. This is due to the fact it is easier for them to maintain and also many brackish dwelling creatures begin there life in fresh water and hence can live in freshwater aquariums. However they do require brackish water as they get older. There is much debate as to what salinity level a brackish aquarium should be maintained at. I recommend that you gradually increase the salinity to approximately 1.012 through your water changes. Unfortunately I believe that Bichir do not tolerate brackish water. So you may have to take the eel back or setup a brackish aquarium less the Bichir.

Thanks, Harry

2x previous post, and ropes and polypterus shouldnt go into brackish.. what size is the eel currently? these eels usually refuse to eat once they start to require salt while being kept in full fresh..
