im new to this site and i have a couple questions to all you fish fanatics. i purchased a red devil cichlid yesterday and i have him in a 55 gallon tank. hes around 6 inches long. how long before he starts being himself and being aggressive towards everything in the tank. so far hes very mellow and just stays around a cave that he made.

In my experience red devils can go either way with aggression. Some get along with everything. Some get along with only certain fish. Others kill everything in the tank and must be kept solo. It's a trial and error experiment with red devils and midas fish.

the guy i got it from said he was a mean fish. but so far all hes done is just bump fish or nip at tails is this a sign that im going to have to keep them by himself?????
 
You need help making your fish more aggressive towards others?

Typically, when someone posts a title like "HELP NEEDED!", their fish is injured, water parameters are out of whack, etc. You aren't going to find anyone here willing to help how to make your fish more aggressive.

Well now I am confused. At 11:44, you claim he is mellow and hangs out near his cave. At 11:55 you say he is nipping tails and you ask if you need to seperate him.

What exactly are you asking and what do you need help with?
 
im not trying to make my fish aggressive. im just trying to find out if im going to have to take out my silver dollars eventually.

Gotcha...sorry if I jumped to conclusions, but your wording had me confused :)

As Chis stated, it can go either way. That's the case with Cichlids often. But the RD can get up to 15"! Your tank is going to be too small for him and most likely, your Silver Dollars will be nothing more than a snack. Silver Dollars are a very peaceful, smaller fish. RDs are very aggressive, larger fish. You can most likely figure out how it will end up.

i purchased a red devil a couple days ago also and mine is pretty much doing what yours is, hiding in his homemade cave.except hes by himself now in a 75. from what people have told me youll have your anwswer in a week or 2. thats supposebly the time it takes them to get used to the tank and be himself.

am i right mfk memebrs?
