Yesterday the new jet 3000 iv been using as the return pump for my wet dry system has started making a clicking noise, almost as if the impellar is moving around in its surround.

naturally I'v amediatly taken the buggar apart and given it a good clean (not that it need it, it was completely spotless).

Anyways, I'v ploped it back in the sump, and guess what its still clicking:irked:.

I then thought it was possibly air trapped in the impellar housing, so once again I take the pump apart this time in the sump water to make sure there is absolutely no air inside the pump. So i tried again and it's still clicking.

So i tested the the pump in my sink the same way this time without any return line head pressure and blow me down it stops clicking!
What do the lovely people of MFK suggest i do to solve this as i'v never had any problem with the pump clicking under head pressure.

I'm currently ripping my hair out as the clicking noise is sending me up the wall, and its not so much the noise thats annoying, it's my incappability to fix it.

If you could get back to me i would be more than gratefull. cheers
Tom :)

Sounds like the impeller might be worn to me. How old is it?

A year at the most, when i had a look at the impeller the shaft didn't seem to have any wear on it. however the impeller didn't look as if it fitted as snug as it should have. the bore inside of the impeller seemed a little on the large side, if it is excess ware its worn extremely evenly. Could this be an excuse to upgrade to a larger out board ? :naughty: If so what would you recomend.
forgot to mention this wet dry is being used in a 185g tank, i also run a eheim pro 3 2080. I'd really like to overkill this tank as its a display peice.

If you are talking about the Maxi-jet 3000, which is 775gph, then you have plenty of opti9on even in that price range. You could go with a Quiet One pump. They are pretty reasonable and you can get some good flow out of them for the money. But don't go above the 6000, I have heard bad things about the larger ones. If you go bigger than 1,500gph, then you might think about switching to Mag Drives. Of course, then there is always the external pump option.

I'm pretty sure that the maxi jet 3000 is marketed in europe as NewJet 3000, from the uk you see. I'd like to up the flow rate to double what u currently have. Would an external be a better choice at this turn over rate? are they a whole lot quieter as i have no experience in my own system of ever running one. I'v heard they are far more reliable as well.

If you are talking 3,000gph or more, then I would definitely say go for an external pump. I like my Reeflo brand pump. They are super quiet.
