Help.. OLD BIO MEDIA NEEDS CHANGE???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
In theory, the little ceramic nuggets will never need replacing...

They can become cloged if you fail to thoroughly (mechanically) filter the water before it passes through them...

But they should not ever break down in the water or "smooth over"...

I'm not familiar with the post/article you are asking about...

ah i thought out of all people you would. It was a guy who hardly gets on here but when he posts he really posts. Something about deposits filling in the cermic pieces that will cause bio media to become less effective over the course of years. Saying it should be changed every 2 years or so. Man i hope he reads this or some one else that retained this info remembers. He writes in lime green writing and has a lizzard in his avatar, a skink i think...

Well first of all I'd never take advice from someone who keeps skinks... lol, jk...

I guess it's not impossible for a tank with excessive minerals (high GH, high KH, high TDS) to get such a build up... but I definitely do not think it's "the norm"...

I mean... minerals are not any more prone to build up on bio media than they are any other hard surfaces in teh system... do you have calcium (or other mineral) deposits building up around your intake tubes?

I obviously cannot "debate against" the other guys post without reading it... and I'm sure there are circumstances that excessive mineral deposits could clog up bio media... I just don't think it's common at all...

so.... why ya askin?

Ah i told some people they should change there bio media after 2 years or so. Lets face it the average mechanical filtration of an aquarium is terrible to what it should be. People don't realize a tank can almost be filtered by mech only. They stock up on bio and think its god and it will never perish. It clogs, it gets build ups, it dies, it gets wasted etc.

The post was a good read, almost a whole page worth of writing from this guy talking about bio smoothing over decreasing in pore size and really smacking my brain around lol. It was just a really good read i wish i could reproduce.

Once in a while a good rinsing of your media is required. Just to keep it from clogging. Sorry its not a page long but its all you need to know. Really.

x2

but i hope i can find this thread... maybe brainp would know... my bet was nutcase but maybe his arch nemesis will know.... lol i look at you guys like that sorry...

Makes sense to me. I've seen the biofilm get really thick and wondered, "Hey, wait! Now all that surface area inside the sponge is off-limits to the flow!" So I gave it a squeeze in old tank water and all is well now. But I suspect a good boil (or more) would be needed to clean out the ceramic rings. Good topic.
