Hello everyone, I'm still new to fish tanks and wondering if anyone can help me out on a 10gallon planted tank. Just wanna know what kind of light system i need and co2 it would help alot thankyou.

if you are still new to fish tanks, you'd might as well go for a low-tech planted tank imo, i.e. don't bother with co2 because that seems to complicate things a lot. As far as lighting I don't know much, but it depends on what plants you are putting in there, I imagine. Some plants do well with less light and others need more... you're probably going to want a high quality light in any case. You might want to use a substrate designed for planted tanks, like laterite if I'm not mistaken. With fertilized substrate and liquid fertilizer dosing, most plants should do well enough without bothering with co2. What plants are you using? Different plants have different needs.

Don't take this the wrong way, but starting with baby tears may not be your best bet... they are notoriously hard to grow even for some of the more experienced members...

But if you want to try it out... start with a good base substrate, i'm going to say ADA Amazonia II soil, setup the tank without water... as in how you would like the hard scape to look...

Then place the baby tears apart from each other so its together in small clutches, and add just a enough water to keep the soil wet, but not completely cover the baby tears...

Then you'll want to cover the top of the tank with something like cling wrap so keep the moisture in the tank very high, add good lighting and then wait for your plants to fill in the space... once its filled in, then you can go ahead and fill the tank as normal and hope your plants don't suffer any melting...

As a side note... once you start really getting into using Co2, ferts and stuff like that is when your really going to have to monitor your water all the more to make sure everything is balanced in the tank, coz too much or little of one thing can cause some major algae out-breaks...

anyway, good luck with your project...

i'm starting a 10 gallon planted tank too! i read that dwarf hair grass was much easier to manage. i'm gonna do that, and moss and maybe java fern? i have no idea what i'm doing lol. does this light look like it's sufficient for a 10 gallon low light tank? after opening it, it looks like a small 6 inch or so compact fluorescent lightbulb. hoping it's 40 or so watts. it's pretty damn bright though.

substrate wise, i was thinking a 1 or 2 inch layer of eco complete and a 1 inch layer of fine gravel on top of that.

filter, i have a aquaclear 20. i also have an extra aquaclear 70, but that might be too much for this planted tank.

stock, i'm gonna do cherry shrimps and neon tetras.

any suggestions are appreciated.

Not sure how much that frosted cover will effect light penetration?

Actually if your just growing low light plants it might be okay? Although you'd have to test it out and see, unless other members have a more definitive answer...

i loved that 25g paludarium thread man. you're pretty experienced when it comes to plants. any recommendations for my 10 gal?

and HK is pretty close to where i'm from ;) i'm from Guangzhou, and i'm gonna go back in May, any recommendations for cool fish places? haha

as far as lighting, i was thinking, i will leave the light on all day during the day and turn it off when i go to sleep, will that be enough light?
