I have a 125g with Malawi cichlids. Lots of large rocks and caves but no gravel or substrate of any kind. It has a large wet-dry trickle filter as well as a Fluval 305 and a Fluval 4 in tank filter that are mainly for water polishing. Water parameters are good but I'm noticing that I have a lot of waste particles floating around in the tank all the time. I never really had this problem before; does anyone have any suggestions? Obviously I could keep less fish, feed less, etc. but does anyone have any other tricks that work for getting rid of floating debris? Thanks.

Without substrate, gunk will float until it gets caught on a rock or sucked into a filter. If you want the Fluvals to pick it up, perhaps you could use the filter returns to push debris toward the filter intakes.

When was the last time you cleaned out the canister filters? Clean them out real good if you haven't in a while and that should take care of it. If all else fails, water changes are the way to go.

Substrate would help, a hob would also help to break up the surface to help the floating junk sink down into the filters................more aeration (bubbles) and or powerheads are your options.

powerheads to move the "crap" to the intakes

Yup whats your return system look like where does your return water push.. Flow in the tank is key to keeping waste not only off the ground but in moving it around to get sucked up by your filtration...

I have a T DIY system from my pump back to my tank and i have no problems here... When i can get another pump i will ugrade to a full rectangle return:) I have no use for power heaqds any more thus more space. and less ugly stuff in the tank:)

Also when did you last Vac it ?
