Fishing at the lake
i jus bought a brand new fx5 today and i put all the media in.set it up on my 150 gal with nothing but water in the tank.when i plug the filter in all u hear is the motor but its not sucking water in.i left it plug for about 30 mins and it stops then it starts again making the same noise.i unplugged it and plugged it back, same thing.what should i do?is this common for fx5's or is mine a defect?thanks in advance.

You have to read the directions. (Just saying, cos if it were up to the man in my house, it would have been plugged in empty too.)

You have to fill it with ~2 gallons of water first. I normally just fill it half way, close it up, connect the intake/outflow and open the valves, then plug it in.

Haha that's so true! Even me and my pops have the "i can do everything without reading instructions" problem... and we always end up having to re-set up everying.

i fill the water half way and that didnt work so i filled it all the way still same thing.all the hoses are in the correct place and all the valves are open.i read the instructions and even watch the dvd.this is my third fx5,my first two works perfect.

Did you leave it running empty for 30 minutes? That's what I gathered from your original post. If not, then I'd recommend reading the Fluval site FAQ, and if you can't find your answer, email them about it.
