Hello everyone, I have quite a dilemma on my hand. I recently moved out of my parents house and into a new townhouse. Now I need to move my tank out of there so I can enjoy my fish without having to take a trip to my parents house. What would be the best way to get this accomplished without putting too much stress on my fish? How many gallons do I really need to save so that the fish wont get too stressed? Any help would be appreciated.

How many fish are in the tank, what size are the fish, how long is the distance to relocate

I wouldn't even attempt to move the tank with water in it. Best bet would be to get a nice sized cooler, add some tank water, battery powered air pump, and get a move on.

rubbermaid will be your friend!!!!!!...oh and home depot buckets are great for fish!!!!!!:)

The cooler idea sounds great, or fish totes with battery powered air pumps that you can get at just about any freshwater bait store would work fine. You can siphon the water into totes or buckets and reuse is when the tank is move... But i definitely wouldn't try moving that bad Larry around with water in it my 90 weighs about 100lbs dry.... and your tank is much large....

If it is a short move, start doing big water changes to get the water as close to the tap water as possible. The water here mostly comes from the same aquifer so tap water doesn't change much. You shouldn't need to transport tank water.

That said, where are you moving the tank from and where are you moving it too?

well my new house is like 5 min away so distance is not a real issue. There are around 11 fish total and average size is 6-7 inches. My main concern is the water itself. I dont plan to carry that bad boy with any more than an inch of water, just enough to keep the sand wet. I just dont want to loose any fish due to the large amount of water that will be replaced.

DO NOT move your tank with anything in it. You will be sorrrry if you do.

i would put the fish in a few buckets with some water.

then i would buy a nice heave duty rubbermaid and put all your sand in it to make your tank lighter! using a big net makes taking any substrate out of a tank! if you have very fine sand then use a brine shrimp net.

keep water in the filters. most of your bacterias are in the sand and the filters! the water isnt that imprtant to save! but if you do want to save it get some big rubbermaids and put them in a truck and use A pump or powerhead to fill them that way you dont have to pick them up. i would do alot of prep work to make it go smooth. make sure you have plenty of room in your new place for a bunch of buckets!

i would level the stand and tank then put the sand back in set up the filters and fill the tank! get all the filters running ad reaclimate the fish and leaves the lights off until the next day all should be ok!

i have moved my big tanks a few times with no loses!! do the prep work it will help you keep your fish alive! if you think you will need a new hose or covers for buckets nets airlines pumps anything get it ready so you are not running around stressed and going crazy looking for things!! also have a few friends around to move things and help set the new tank up! sorry for being so long winded but i just changed everything from my 220 over to a new 100 gallon tank!

i did all this stuff this past weekend! good luck!
