I've had my royal clown knife for a month and he's put on good size already. I know they are mostly active at night but damn even when i give him worms during the day he will only eat them when they are close to his pvc and he can just stick his head out and get it. Sometimes i catch him out of the pvc during the day but he retreats back once he sees me. I've been trying to only offer food in the day but I don't know what else to do to make him warm up to me. You think some floating plants would help? Any tips on getting him to quit hiding all day? I don't want to take away his pvc because i don't want to stress him.

How large is he? I have a Clown Knife of 8" and a Royal Knife of 5". I have had them for close to 5 months now and the clown is just now starting to warm up to me. My royal is still sketchy. I've had them both since they were about 2" each. Just give them some tlc and they'll warm up to you over time.

he's 9-10". i was thinking maybe some floating plants would help him feel more secure

That might help. I don't have any in mine. I actually have a cut 2 liter coke bottle (which they never go in anymore) and a small $10 orniment that they're too large to fit in anymore. I've heard floating plants help, but I've never used them myself. Give him some time and he should come around. As I said, my clown took nearly 5 months to start warming up to me...and my royal is still skiddish; and I got them both at the same time.

What size tank is he in? Can you post some pics so I can see what I can look forward to when mine gets that size?

hes alone in a 48x24x31 for now. sorry no digi cam at the moment. i'm sure there are members on here with even bigger royals with pics. i'd like to see some too

I dont have a royal, but my clown was very shy as he was young, mine is about 2 years old now and is out and about 24/7 even lets me hand feed and pet. I have been bit a couple of times feeding but that is bound to happen.

here's my 18" royal. if you limit the places to hide(leave a couple) and add other fish he might be more active. I can actually train my royal to hide were I want. Also feed him in the middle of the day so he learns to eat when you want to watch him.
