Dont know if its the right spot but I need to go so I dont have time to search. I have a poluted tank from my water its horrible water and killed off half my african tank. Ne ways I have sand in the tank.... if the water has been in there for awhile and I took out all the water and put new water in, would I have to replace the sand to be sure that water ever caused the death of my fish doesnt stay in the tank as it might soak up or stay inthe sand??

I would think so. If you are starting over...why not go with new sand. Its cheap and you'll be sure that way.

Do you know exactly what it was that killed them?

Hey Ash,

you could always clean the sand. What you need is two buckets and a small container.. Its tedious but i think aquarium sand is kinda expensive. Anyways empty all the tanks sand and put some sand in the small container. Scrub and rub the sand with water in the container. Keep emptying the water in the small container and refilling till the water is clear.. Doesn't take that long and gets all the gunk out.

I'm pretty sure you work in an aquarium shop tho.

no not ne more... the guy there was douche and stopped sched. me b/c he found someone from another pet shop and didnt give me the chance just b/c I came from a grocery store instead of a pet place and then was an a-hole about it =(

Thanks for the adivce =)

Sorry to hear about your fish :(
I would go with new subtrate. Do you still want sand or thinking gravel now? If you don't want to take the chance with the other fish, then I say get some new subtrate. But if you're hurtin' on cash, and still don't want to take the chance, I'd say throw some HOT water over the sand and stir it around a bit and repeat.

Yah I have no CASH but my mom feels bad b/c those were techinically her fish and her tank really its mine but I let her pick out the fish and pay for them lol and then I tell her its her tank so she is happy with her fish in the big room where people see it. Anyways she likes the sand and I am not taking jack chances on anything everytime I take a chance (with an animal) its always a bad idea... so I dont take chances if it means they can die. My mom said she will help pay for things I have to replace. I am gonna end up having to replace alot b/c My sponge filter, my mini wet-dry with a sponge in it... along with huge abosorbing pellets... grr. I dont wanna take chances with those either.

I am not sure though if I do gravel its easier to clean and and I can use my bigger filter (it cant be used with sand) ... hmm.

Howdy Ash,

Sorry to hear about your tank. That sucks!
Since you don't know what caused the disaster, I suggest new sand (cheap from a home improvement store). If you have special sand that you'd like to keep, them put it in a bucket, use a garden hose and hold it inside, slowly "digging" thru the sand. The swirling of the sand will help to clean it. No reason to throw things away if they still function, just use some diluted bleach or concentrated vinegar, whichever smell you like best ;) I don't really get why a big filter is incompatible with sand, maybe you could shorten the outlet in order to prevent sand from being sucked in.

Good luck!

You can also boil the sand in water for about 2 hours to kill any potantial bacteria.

Thanks for the info. Yah the big filter doesnt work b/c I tried that already and I put a sponge like thing around it also so the sand particals cant get in but it didnt work well it keeps getting jammed with sand in the motor and it become un alligned and makes aloud noise I ve gone through 2 filters I need to take this one back and get a dif. one or something.
