I'm setting up my 150 gallon. I've got my sump, a 950 gph return pipe, flexible piping and my overflow box. How do you typically get the water to enter the overflow from the tank? What brands or types would you recommend?

Also what are the benefits using the PVC pipes as opposed to the flexible tubing? Is it because it can handle pressure better? Can the tubing from the fx5 handle the pressure of 950 gph if clamped down sufficiently?

Is your tank drilled? or are you using an overflow box? Drilled overflows will start on their own, but boxes need a little help with starting their siphon.

The tubing you got should be okay, vinyl hose is very resilient, but can get brittle and bust after long term use. If you got the flexible PVC tubing, you're golden...you just need to get the right fittings. The solid PVC could be used to return water to the tank, but I wouldn't as it doesn't allow you the flexibility in routing the returns. But for drains, its good because it's cheaper and can handle having junk go through it. But again, it depends on the tank as to whether it makes sense to use flexible or solid PVC.

I'm not sure if the FX5 hosing can handle the pressure. It's possible, but I would rather spend the $5-$10 on new vinyl hose than take the chance of it not fitting and then having to find fittings for it.

From your question, it sounds like you only have the outer box? An overflow has 2 sides, a box that sits in the tank with weirs, and an outer box. A U shaped siphon tube sits in both boxes. When the pump is turned on, water overflows through the weirs inside the tank and is siphoned into the outer box by the U tube.

Here is another version with built in siphon instead of a tube.
