Today, I noticed my ornate started floating on the very top of the tank. Wondering if it's dead, I touched it(imagine how dire the situation is to have a bichir allowing you to touch it), but it didn't respond much although it's still alive. I turned on the power filter(the other filter in my tank that makes my fishes go round) and it responded much better than before. It made an attempt to dive down but I can see it has some problems diving down, as seen from behavior. I suspect that it has lost it's swim-bladder control but it seems to behave normally until last night, when it begun swimming up and down against the tank. Need some advice on what is the actual cause and what I can do. Thanks in advance.

It could be internal problems. Sometimes blood will come out of it's anus. Causes are it could have eaten something too fatty as it's hard for it to digest fatty foods and will produce gas inside the belly that got trap. Could have swallow a gravel or other stuff that made some damage to the internal organs. Bad water quality can cause it to act like that.

Try to do water change about 50% and add salt about 1tsp per 5g. Or you can try Metronidazole.
