I will be getting a 6' tank and I want to try my first attempt a breeding. Which of these fish would be the best choice for a beginner?

sagittae
carpintis
P. friedrichstahlii
P multifaciatus

Any parachromis would be fun, but my vote goes to sagittaes. There aren’t too many out there, so it would be cool to breed.

A 6 ft tank is a good size to start breeding especially with the species you have listed. From the list if you are new to spawning cichlids I would pick either the Parachromis Multifasciatus or P. Friedrichsthalii (Loiselli) as generally these are more tame and mild mannered compared to the Amphilophus Saggitae or the Herichthys Carpintis.

It is going to be harder for you to spawn these if you have already grown out and have larger males. Adding a female to a tank with an established male can be dangerous for the female. I’d recommended using a divider. I personally prefer to purchase 10 juveniles and grow them out together and allow them to pair off naturally then remove the extras.

At the end of the day though you should choose what species you enjoy / like the most and start with that.

My thinking was to get the tank going with 4 females and then introduce the male. Let me know if thats the best plan or not.

sagittae- 7-8"
carpintis- 5-6"
P. friedrichstahlii- 8-9"
P multifaciatus- 5-6"

That would be a better plan than just introducing one female, as established males and new world cichlid males in general are notorious for killing females (it isn’t uncommon for females to kill males as well) . Whichever species you pick I’d get some females that are quite a bit smaller than the male so they won’t try and challenge him for dominance and you can create hiding places the females can get into and the male cannot. This will help if you ever decide to use the hole in the divider method for spawning them
