i want to set up a monster planted tank at the end of the summer and would like some help/advice for planning it out. the tank will be either a 180g (72x24x24) or 225g (72x30x24). the primary inhabitant will be an arowana. to maximize swimming space, i want mostly ground cover plants like glosso or HC and maybe some anubias or moss on driftwood in the corners.

what kind of equipment should i get (lights, filtration, co2)?

i've done a 40g planted tank before w/ co2 and 110 watts of light and it went well... do planted tank guidelines change with a monster tank?

If you've done it before I would think it would be a scale up project, nothing should change.

thanks for the reply. i was just wondering if it really is as simple as scaling up.

i've heard the watts per gallon rule breaks down with larger tanks and lighting is my main concern... if i follow the standard WPG rule, i'd need about 500 watts of lighting on for 10 hours. the electricity bill would be through the roof!

can anyone confirm how many watts of lighting i need for a 180g or 225g tank? both would be 2 feet deep.

i am also planning to set up that kind of tank size. i would like to ask what filter are you using?
regarding your light i think you should be using metal halide . right?

If u want glosso u have to use Co2 and 1W/0,8g
This tank is big, so the best option is a SUMP, but a planted (glosso) with a SUMP u lose many CO2, so its complicate
If u can afford many canisters its better to the glosso, but i prefer SUMP, its more easy and pratical
Remember, u need a filtration at least 10 times the volume of the tank
