Was watching tv last night and my common plec and my royal whiptail pleco kept darting to the top of the tank out the water a tad then back to the bottom an carried on sucking the glass as usuall. they have never done this before?
Then when i came home from work today my all my catfish and my black ghost knife are at the top of the tank and the only way i can descirbe it is relating to a human needing air after being under water, they are just hanging around the top and as i say looks like they are trying to get air?

water change aint due for about 4 days yet but im gettin the feeling somethings up with my water maybe?

I have a 450 litre tank 120gallon roughly and i got a ehiem 2217 and ive been told i need a bigger filter... could this be the problem?

check your water parameters and just do the water change anyways. Your fish can only benefit from it.

Ok, i went out tonight, got in at bout 10 past 12, to find every1 of my fish at the top as if they were gasping for air and 1 of my pim pictus had died.

So rushing round like a headless chicken I done a 50% water change and the fish seem to be behaving normally now.

Can someone please explain y this could be coz thinking about it, the day before i put the fish into the bigger aquarium this was also happening as i werent gna put them in the bigger aquarium for a couple of days but as they were behaving as described I quickly filled the bigger aquarium and transfered them over.

Any ideas, thoughts, suggestions or even an answer would be much appriciated

Thanks
Sean

did you let the tank cycle? if not did you use something to remove the chlorine from your water? you can lose alot of fish this way believe me I learned this the hard way but experience and web sites like this are priceless just be sure the water parameters are good your fish will thank you for it.just my two cents

can we get additional information? It sounds like you're just throwing your fish from new tanks to new tanks.

how long have the tanks been running? Have you checked your water params? Do you treat new water? Did you just fill up the tanks with brand new water? Did you transfer anything from the old tank to the new tank (water, filter)? have you tested water from ANY of the tanks? I know you're in a panic and trying to save your fish but the important info is missing

how long have the tanks been running? The 30 gallon about 6 months, the new 120gallon that they are in nows been running about 5 weeks
Have you checked your water params? LFS check my water weekly and nothing wrong there.
Do you treat new water? Yes used EASYNEO for freashwater been using it since I brought my first tank.
Did you just fill up the tanks with brand new water? The 120gallon, Yes
Did you transfer anything from the old tank to the new tank (water, filter)? Filter was changed over from the old tank (eheim 2217)
have you tested water from ANY of the tanks? As said before, water is very reguarly checked.

The fish seem to be fine now after I done abbout a 40% water change and I managed to get my hands on an FX5 yesterday so I installed that last night too.

LFS said maybe theres a lack of oxygen in the tank?
If so y would this be?
I have a small air pump but never use it as it seems to make loads of tiny suspended particles, shall I install that?
